Good Food comes from Good Seed

Welcome to Sustainable Seed Co. - Your Source for Certified Organic Heirloom Seeds

Since 2008, we've been offering heirloom seeds, garden seeds, and organic heirloom seeds - non-hybrid vegetable, flower, and herb seeds. We are America's best source for heirloom vegetable seeds, heritage grains and herb seeds.

We wanted to offer heirloom seeds for one reason: they're not only our history, but our security. You can save the seeds of the vegetables, herbs and grains we offer, and with the proper methods, reliably get the same plants for generations to come. We're also a CERTIFIED ORGANIC seed farm - setting us apart from many others who only resell seed. With over 1,800 varieties for you to choose from (over 700 of them bulk seed and 600 of them organic seeds), we're also the web's premiere source for backyard gardeners and farmers alike.

Company History

Sustainable Seed Company's founder, John Fendley, or "Farmer John", got the idea to start a seed company while reading through a book of known vegetable varieties. He was dismayed to find that many of the varieties he wanted to grow were no longer available. John had seen his grandmother feed a family of seven from her garden, and knew that access to good seed is the foundation of food security and a lifeline to cultural heritage. He saw the opportunity to put rare heirloom seeds back into the hands of gardeners and farmers, and from his experience as the owner of a retail nursery, he knew the public was hungry for them.

John founded Sustainable Seed Company in 2008 with Theo Bill, whose experience in marketing and graphic design complemented Johns horticultural knowledge and business savvy. They chose the name "Sustainable Seed" to express how this sensibility runs through every aspect of the company. For example, Sustainable Seed Company sources its seed packaging and shipping materials with the most rigorous, comprehensive and ground-breaking standards in the industry, including Cradle to Cradle, Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.

Our first retail store was in in Monte Rio, CA, and offered 76 varieties that first year. The business took off, and it wasnt long before a customer offered us space to farm on her organic vineyard in Forestville, CA. They began to produce seed on the certified organic winery, with seed stock sourced from the extensive collection of seed bank John had amassed.

In another few years the company was ready to purchase its own farm, and chose the agricultural community of Covelo, CA in Mendocino County, the first county in the U.S. to outlaw the production of genetically engineered crops. Having its own certified organic farm allowed Sustainable Seed Company to advance its goals of sustainably producing the best varieties of heirloom vegetables for organic growing conditions. A wind turbine and a large freestanding solar array provided over two thirds of the power to run the companys operations. We became a charter member of Partners for Sustainable Pollination, a collaborative effort comprising farmers, growers, beekeepers and scientists working to improve the health of honey bees and support native pollinators.

For several years Sustainable Seed Company operated successfully in the Covelo location and grew so fast that the company saw the need to relocate to a larger area. In 2015 the company moved to the agricultural hub of Chico, CA. It's the perfect location for a growing seed company with a Mediterranean climate that's best for seed production, closer proximity to shipping and distribution centers, and plenty of space to expand the warehouse and farming operations. The new location also offers a retail store that is open to the public.

Our thanks go out to all our customers who have been using Sustainable Seed Company's organic and heirloom seeds over these last several years and we are excited to be growing even more! Stay tuned for more news of our expansion and new varieties of seeds that we'll be adding soon. We are always on the look-out for rare varieties to add to our growing collection so please share your seed story with us online or at our new store.
