Cucumis sativus
Ashley Cucumber Seed (65 days)

1 Gram Seed Package/25-35 seeds

Got real hot and humid summers? You know the kind where you need a fan and a mint julep?  I'm talking about those hot southern summers.  Have you had a real problem with downy mildew because of those wet summers?  Then the Ashely is the cucumber for you!  It was bred for just such conditions.

Ashley was released by Clemson Agricultural Experimental Station, Charleston in 1956.

These productive vines produce 7-8", dark green cucumbers.  Ashley is an excellent slicing variety.

Beat those hot Southern days with these crisp, cool cucumbers.  YES...I have to say it...You will be as cool as a cucumber!

Intermediate resistance to Downy Mildew.

Recommended by the Following State Universities or Ag Extension Offices as a variety that performs well for their region .  CA, FL, TX

Planting Tips:

Soak seeds overnight before planting either individually in rows or hills of 3-6 seeds each.  Tighter spacing and higher yields can be achieved through trellising the plants on fences or poles.  Continually harvesting will keep the plant producing new fruits.

  • Heirloom cucumbers do not like acidic soil!
  • Frost tender.  Heirloom cucumbers love warm weather.
  • To get an earlier heirloom cucumber crop start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost.
  • Heirloom cucumbers are thirsty!  Never let them go dry.  Heirloom cucumbers are over 95 % water.
  • Fertilize heirloom cucumbers with manures BEFORE planting.
  • Cucumber beetles are "supposed" to dislike marigolds or wood ashes sprinkled at the base of  cucumber vines.

Seeding Rate:

35,000-40,000 plants/acre, 3-4 lb./acre

Heirloom seeds are hardy but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - not letting the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely or overwatering and possibly having them rot.
