Intense purple passion has come to a basil.  Makes an amazing edible border.  In the past I've planted with silver leaf type plants to really set off the purple.  Maybe it is my imagination, but purple basil seems to have a lighter, spicy flavor that can be eaten fresh in salads.  Plants grow about 12-16" tall and about 10" wide. 

Dyers use purple basil to dye dark brown colors.

TIP  With any basil, to keep the leaves coming pinch back the blooms to create a more bushy plant loaded with leaves.  You will notice when you pinch one flowering bud, two branches will come back in its place.  My grandmother taught me to do this with tomatoes to keep them from getting leggy and to increase branches. More branches more tomatoes!
