Long Green Improved is said to have been introduced in 1870. It surely appears many times in catalogs there after.

It has stood the test of time because it is a strong, vigorous producer of 10" long cucumbers. Some will exceed 12" and more. Excellent for slicing or picked smaller for pickling. Very solid and crisp.

1933 Shuway's Seed Catalog says about Long Green Improved Slicing Cucumber
"The standard general purpose variety, excellent for both slicing and picking. the fruits are 12-14" long, about 3" thick, straight, tapered a little toward the stem end, and colored a rich green with black spines. The flesh is white, solid and crisp, with a choice flavor. The young cukes are splendid for pickling, the full-grown ones for slicing and the rip yellow ones for sweet pickles. the fruits mature almost as rapidly as smaller varieties, and the vines are prolific. Very popular for the home garden."

Planting Tips:

Soak seeds overnight before planting either individually in rows or hills of 3-6 seeds each. Tighter spacing and higher yields can be achieved through trellising the plants on fences or poles. Continually harvesting will keep the plant producing new fruits.

Heirloom cucumbers do not like acidic soil!
Frost tender. Heirloom cucumbers love warm weather.
To get an earlier heirloom cucumber crop start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost.
Heirloom cucumbers are thirsty! Never let them go dry. Heirloom cucumbers are over 95 % water.
Fertilize heirloom cucumbers with manures BEFORE planting.
Cucumber beetles are "supposed" to dislike marigolds or wood ashes sprinkled at the base of cucumber vines.

35,000-40,000 plants/acre, 3-4 lb./acre

Heirloom seeds are hardy but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - not letting the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely or overwatering and possibly having them rot.
