Marketer cucumber has been an all time favorite since 1943.  It produces very tasty 9" long deep green cucumbers.  Marketer cucumber is just perfect for slicing, salads and pickles when picked small. Of course those of you into home spa treatments will use them as cucumber slices to reduce wrinkles and swelling around the eyes.  Don't worry I won't tell your secret ;)  All sorts of good treatments come from the garden!

1948 Burgess Seed Co. Catalogs says about Marketer cucumber...
"The dark green fruits are similar in appearance to A&C.  Size 2 1/4 X 7 3/4 inches.  Slightly taped at each end and are ready for pickling a few days earlier than A&C.  A prolific bearer and popular for market and shipping."

Planting Tips:

Soak seeds overnight before planting either individually in rows or hills of 3-6 seeds each.  Tighter spacing and higher yields can be achieved through trellising the plants on fences or poles.  Continually harvesting will keep the plant producing new fruits.

  • Heirloom cucumbers do not like acidic soil!
  • Frost tender.  Heirloom cucumbers love warm weather.
  • To get an earlier heirloom cucumber crop start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost.
  • Heirloom cucumbers are thirsty!  Never let them go dry.  Heirloom cucumbers are over 95 % water.
  • Fertilize heirloom cucumbers with manures BEFORE planting.
  • Cucumber beetles are "supposed" to dislike marigolds or wood ashes sprinkled at the base of  cucumber vines.

Seeding Rate:

35,000-40,000 plants/acre, 3-4 lb./acre

Heirloom seeds are hardy but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - not letting the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely or overwatering and possibly having them rot.
