Orginally from Italy these onions are considered LONG day, but some people claim they grow them just fine in day neutral areas.

Red cipollini is bright red, flattened and can be used for fresh eating, boiling, or braising.

Red cipollini is about 3-4" across and about 1-1 1/2" in depth.

Stores well. In fact it can be seen in Italy braided (like garlic) and hanging in kitchens.

Seedlings can be fall planted here in Northern California and should over winter well.

In my opinion red cipollini onions produce a sweeter onion when over-wintered.

Planting Tips:

Day length sensitive – check for which is best in your area. Needs a light friable soil to grow successfully. Start in early spring, scatter seeds in tray ¼”- ½” apart in moist soil and put in warm place. Transplant out 8-10 weeks later in final spacing. Thinned onions are great in salads!

Heirloom seeds are hardy but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - not letting the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely or overwatering and possibly having them rot.
