Our family owned Seed Company provides gardeners with over 1650 varieties of organic and heirloom seeds. We offer the largest variety available, making us the best source for Certified Organic Heirloom seed.
Sustainable Seed Company has recently added over 100 new tomatoes to our selection which currently totals more than 300 varieties. Discovering “new” heirloom seeds is one of our passions, and we would love to hear from anyone who is growing heirloom seeds that have been passed down for generations. We hope to preserve this part of history and believe that with the continuing encroachment from large producers of hybrid and GMO seeds, that companies such as our own, along with our customers, may be a crucial link to saving the future of food.
As a family owned business, Sustainable Seed Company endeavors to provide our customers with the quality of seed we put in our own garden and on our tables. We have a strong focus on both quality and customer service. Our seeds are grown right on our own farm to ensure maximum quality and germination rates. As we discover new seeds, they are tested for purity, planted and harvested until we have enough seed to supply to customers. It may be several years before there is a sufficient quantity for customers as the strains often originate from just a handful of seeds.
Information is an important aspect of our company and is crucial for developing a sustainable garden. Many gardeners don’t have the resources to learn how to plant, harvest and save heirloom seeds. We offer a variety of information within our pages, blog and youtube channel to educate our customers about these methods and more. What sets us apart from other seed companies is our effort to provide this information to our customers so they may never need to purchase that strain from us again. We do this to encourage a sustainable lifestyle and to promote organic heirloom seed gardening.
Part of the education process is explaining terms commonly associated with our lifestyle. The term “natural” often is used; however it doesn’t actually convey a legal meaning within organic gardening. We are a “Certified Organic” producer and show documentation within the site, ensuring customers that they seed they purchase from us has not been genetically engineered or modified. In layman’s terms this means that the seeds harvested at the end of the year will provide the same level of quality next year. It is important to note though that in some areas, heirloom seeds may be at risk of cross-pollination from commercial farms. We recommend learning more about hand-pollinating your own seeds to protect the garden from this unwarranted intrusion.
The crew at Sustainable Seed Company is pleased to provide our customers with the largest quantity and quality of certified organic heirloom seed available. Check out our selection and learn the value of our high quality and low prices for planting a sustainable garden.
Q & A
Question: Are you affiliated with Monsanto(Seminis), or Syngenta (click "wholesale home garden"). Are you listed as a dealer/reseller of these companies? Click any of these links (to the left) and check for yourself what seed companies are on the list. We are not.
Answer: We get asked this question several times a day. ABSOLUTELY NOT! We are a family owned business founded in 2009. We 100% oppose GE crops and their wreckless contamination of other valuable food crops/environment. In fact the whole reason this company was founded was to protect seed.
Question: Are you Certified Organic?
Answer: Yes, we are certified organic seed handlers and the farm itself is USDA Certified Organic. However, we do sell both conventional grown seed and organic seed to meet the needs of all or our customers.
Question: How are you different from other organic heirloom seed companies?
Answer: First off it is important to note that there are VERY few Organic + Heirloom seed companies out there. Meaning most of the seed companies out there sell heirloom vegetable seeds, but Very few sell Certified Organic Heirloom Seeds. Click here to read about the difference. However, to further answer the question one of the most important distinctions about Sustainable Seed Company is we actually sustainably farm and grow many of our own organic heirloom seeds right here on our certified organic farm. Very few seed companies do this and in fact none to our knowledge use green technology like our wind turbine and solar panels to sustain our farm's energy needs. We are a company with one foot in the past and our eye on the future. We remember the lessons our grandparents taught us and embrace the green technology of tomorrow for those that follow in our footsteps. We want to leave the world a cleaner and greener place then how we found it. Yes, you can produce food and seed without the use of Genetically Engineered crops, toxic pesticides and destructive herbicides. We are changing the world one seed at a time!
Question: What is the best way to contact you?
Answer: Through our support center. This program allows us to assign your particular problem or question immediately to the right person. Since we are an internet based company we check our emails many times during the day. This also allows us to track the question and resolve any issues on the whole quickly. 90% of the time you will get a much faster email response then you will get a phone response.
Question: Don't you think you are loosing a great deal of biz by not printing a paper catalog?
Answer: By far this is the most heated and talked about decision we have made as a company. We knew taking a stance against paper catalogs was not going to to be easy as people have been doing it this way for over a 175 years. However, anytime someone does a "first" it can be very controversial. Our environmental reasons are clearly lined out on our page as why we do not print a catalog. There are other reasons as well that are not as impactful as our green ones, but are important as well and may appeal to people's practical side instead of the green fuzzy side. For example; having an on-line catalog allows us to update quantities on rare seeds immediately. This is important as you NEVER get a refund check with your order saying sorry we are out of that or here is a substitution...sorry it is not what you really wanted! We all know how frustrating that is, but did you ever think that someone has a full time job of writing all those refund checks, opening the envelopes, interpreting people's handwriting on the orders, hand processing them into the system and fulfilling them? In truth we would need to hire two more people just to handle this. We currently only have 4 full time employees! That is a huge increase in labor cost that we cannot afford and keep seed packets at our very low rate of $1.99

Hey for what it's worth, I LOVE your approach to this business, your commitment organics, to NON GMO and protecting good traditional / heirloom seeds, and I'm perfectly fine with you not having a printed catalog. I will be spending a lot more time checking out your site and saving my pennies for some orders!!
As a potential new customer, my initial look at your website is fine...however, without going through the checkout process, how would I know what forms of payment you accept? Please let me know upon your response as I am interested in ordering from you!
What is the moisture content of your seed? Im interested in deep freezing for future use
I have been looking for a company to buy seed from, and I found you and I'm elated. Not only was sustainability important for me, but also that said company would have absolutly no affiliation with MONSATO or any Monsato affilated companies. I'm very happy that you are able to provide these seeds.
To my family this means the world and we appreciate it
is it safe to think heirloom seeds are organic and non-GE, I have some seed I bought 2 years ago that says heirloom???
Just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU for customizing my safety seed package and for all the wonderful info. IMary
