Black Seeded Simpson (45 days)

An old reliable lettuce that is heat resistant, slow to bolt and very dependable. Leaves are large, but lightly crispy and ruffled.  Excellent for spring, early summer and fall planting.  I remember my grandmother growing this variety.  She was a practical German woman, so it was one of her favorite for its consistent yields...when the rabbits didn't find it!

1885 James J.H. Seed Co. says..
"An improvement on the Simpson, being finer in many respects."

1918 Great Northern Seed Co. says...
"One of the most easily grown and most reliable varieties, growing well during the hot Summer when most others are failures, therefore most satisfactory and popular for home use, but also largely grown for the market, especially in the Western States. It is a good shipper and it does equally well outdoors as in the greenhouse. Very early, slow to go to seed, with broad, crumpled leaves of very light green color, tender and sweet."

1935 Isbell's Seed Co. catalog says...
"Splendid loose leaf or curled leaf lettuce of great popularity with market and home gardeners. Grows large leaves, the inner ones forming a semi-compact head, very tender, crisp, fine quality, and sweet flavor. Always reliable and easily grown; ready for market in 45 days."

Planting Tips for Organic Heirloom Lettuce Seeds:

Sow directly into very fertile, loose soil.  Thin down to final spacing once plants are established.  For best results, plant in spring or fall.  Harvest outside leaves for a continual harvest.  For longer harvest, stagger plantings every 2-3 weeks.

Heat Tolerance:  If you are growing lettuce in the heat, plant them where they will get afternoon shade.  Lettuce is a spring and fall crop in really hot areas.

Harvest Tips: For a continual harvest, sow every 2-3 weeks a new crop if cutting full heads, otherwise harvesting outside leaves will encourage a longer harvest from individual plants.

Seeding Rate:

30,000 plants/acre, aproximately 2 oz.

Heirloom seeds are hardy but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - not letting the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely or overwatering and possibly having them rot.
