Grain Terms Defined:

Lodging Scale:  Lodging simply means falling over.  This can occur for a number of reasons such has strong winds, rain, hail, genetic weakness of the stalk, over fertilization, insufficient phosphorous and many other factors.  If grain lodges, it makes it extremely difficult to harvest either by machine or by hand.  We rate this on a scale from 1 to 10.  1 meaning it lodges very easily and 10 meaning it seldom lodges.

I feel it is very important to highlight the importance of lodging to the small holder. When combining it is little more than an inconvenience, but heading out to a lodged field with a sickle can defeat the most stoic.
