Cleome serrulata

Rocky Mountain Bee Plant (Flower)

Flower seed packet contains 250 mg/approximately 30 seeds.

Wild Cleome "discovered" by Lewis & Clark

Bees and insects enjoy the rich nectar from the blossoms.

Annual. Lives just one year. Grows quickly, blooms heavily, dies with first frost, but can regrow following spring if seed falls on bare ground.

Grows up to five feet tall.

The seeds are often consumed by morning doves.

When the leaves have matured, they are harvested, boiled and can be eaten as greens.

The seeds are edible and can be made into flour.

Commonly used as a paint or dye.

American Indians and Western settlers used this in treatment of fevers, stomach disorders, and sore eyes.  A poultice is made of the crushed leaves and used to reduce swelling and boiled with a rusty iron to be made into a drink to treat anemia.

*Note: For best results, seeds should be planted between fall and early spring, or cold stratified for at least three days prior to sowing.  This can be done by placing seeds on a moist paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag, and placing this in the freezer.  Normally, you shouldn't freeze seeds, as this can cause their cells to burst as the water inside them expands.  But some seeds can survive, and indeed need, this "winter treatment".
