2010 Trials
Got planted late.  Definitely does not like heat and by heat I mean we are currently having highs 70sF.   Nights are still in the 50sF and mornings are foggy.  However, this barley has continued to decline as the temperatures rise.  Makes sense considering it is from a high altitude with cold weather.  Would be interesting to see if it had any frost tolerance.

I sowed a small plot in a garden about 15 miles west of Yosemite, in the Stanislaus National Forest at 3900 ft altitude, around july, with irrigation from a hose. It started growing beautifully, but my heart was broken when our goats busted into the garden and mowed it down. it came back up instantly, but was mowed again by the goats. I had to leave the garden to go home for the Fall, but my friend just went back up there this month (April) and saw the barley plants in full flower all over the entire garden! What I'm assuming happened is that someone continued to water the plants, they went to seed, the goats ate them, the seeds somehow passed through their system without being damaged, and then pooped them out, the seed sprouted at some point during the winter, the plants lived through the harsh Sierra Nevada winter (this was a sad Winter in California, it was unussally warm and dry), and they are now flowering magically. I would love to hear if anyone else has any other explanations for how this occured. My buddy is planning on harvest the plants and making moonshine. Thank you for these blessed plants!!
