Fagopyrum tataricum
Madawaska Buckwheat

1 gram of seed or about 30 seeds.

Madawaska is a tartary buckwheat which is bitterer, but contains more rutin than common buckwheat.

Ideally, the plant prefers light sandy-medium loam, but can handle heavy clay soils with good organic input.  Most buckwheat requires well-drained soil, but can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very acid soil. It cannot grow in the shade.

Leaves - raw or cooked. Acceptable raw when added in small quantities to mixed chopped salads, otherwise the leaves are much better cooked. They are rich in rutin.

Seed - cooked as a cereal.  The seed can also be sprouted and used in salads, or ground into a powder and used as a cereal.

An edible oil is obtained from the seed.

Buckwheat is often counted as grain, though unlike most grains they are not true grasses. Buckwheat is thus not related to true wheat. Buckwheat is a fast-growing, warm-season, succulent, broad-leaved annual attaining a height of 2 to 4 feet. It has one main stem with several smaller branches. Leaf shape is roughly triangular, and flowers are white, pink, or red. Seeds are of two types depending on the variety: large and dark-colored with triangular-shaped sides, or smaller and gray-colored, with a rounder shape.
