Triticum aestivum subsp. aestivum

Wit Wokoring (168 days)

50 seeds per package.

Spring Planted Wheat.

Hard White.  Threshing scale of 6.

A very tall, fuzzy headed wheat originally from South Africa.  Finishes extremely well in our hot dry summers.

Golden, plump kernels held high on strong 5' stalks that rarely lodge.  A nice selection for organic growing because it out grows most weeds and stalks are held high for easy harvesting.  Easy to grow and had few if any disease problems this year.

Makes an excellent bread flour.

The objective when planting wheat is to establish a uniform stand of at least 25 plants per square foot with adequate fall growth for tiller development and an established root system for winter survival. Planting methods include drilling, broadcast seeding, and aerial seeding. Specific seeding rates will vary widely with topography, climate, and management approach. In general, stick to 30-40 seeds per square foot at a depth of 1.5 inches. Wheat will sprout best in soil that is slightly compacted, so it's good to tamp the bed slightly after planting. With only 50 seeds available, I can't exactly tell you about fields of waving wheat stretching to the horizon! But my 2 square feet is verdant and flourishing. My wife, with her common squashes and beets, cannot understand the deep love between a man and his wheat. I have a question, though. The name "wokoring" does not exist in the Afrikaans language. "Wit koring" simply means "white wheat." Could "wokoring" be a misunderstanding stemming from some abbreviation such as "W.O. koring" so something like that? I'm a researcher, so I could dig up stuff & share with you if you could help me a bit here.
