Crimson Flowered Fava (75 days)

  sustainable seed Sustainably Grown

Dating from around 1778 this crimson colored wonder is not only tasty as a bean, but you can eat the flowers and leaves in salads.  Imagine these fantastic colors in your salad at the next dinner party!  Plants are much shorter than most favas making this an excellent fava for small gardens or borders.

Eat the beans when young as a green bean or dried in soups.

Favas add tons of fantastic nitrogen to your soil without the use of nasty chemical fertilizers.  Plant them in the fall, enjoy great profusion of crimson color, but chop them into the soil before they produce a bean for maximum nitrogen fixing.  That's it!  Now you're ready to plant your hungry nitrogen plants like corn come summer!

Extremely rare.  Once they are out of stock we will have no more until the following year.

Planting Tips:

50-60 days for green, 100+ days for dry beans.  Boost yields and germination by adding inoculants.

Avoid planting in soil that stays wet.  Heirloom bean diseases thrive in wet conditions, and the roots may not get enough oxygen.

Heirloom beans like soil that is slightly acid, about 6.5.  This can be achieved by adding mulched pine needles, peat moss, or sulfur.

Try wide row growing for beans.  Make your heirloom bean rows three across instead of just one.  Three wide is perfect because most people can reach across that width.  You can grow 3 times the amount of heirloom beans in the same space, you reduce the amount of area for weeds, and you'll save on water.

Heirloom seeds are hardy but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - don't let the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely, and don't overwater and possibly have them rot.
