Bibb Lettuce (43 days)

Lt. John B. Bibb served in the War of 1812, represented Logan County in the Kentucky House of Representatives and the state Senate from 1827 to 1834.  Lt. Bibb was also an amateur horticulturist and developed the Bibb lettuce we know and love today.  However, it wasn't offered commercially until 1935.

Bibb is a fabulous tasting lettuce that is crisp, clean and easy to grow.  Bibb will hold longer in the heat than  Buttercrunch Bibb, yet still grows quickly in our cool weather.

Bibb has ornamental light green leaves that are dotted with 1/4" red spots. Crispy heads often self blanch in the center. A true farmers market variety and perfect for the home gardener.

Recommended by the Following State Universities or Ag Extension Offices as a variety that performs well for their region . CA, FL, ID, IL, KY, KS, LA, OK, OR, TX

Planting Tips:

Sow directly into very fertile, loose soil.  Thin down to final spacing once plants are established.  For best results, plant in spring or fall.  Harvest outside leaves for a continual harvest.  For longer harvest, stagger plantings every 2-3 weeks.

Heat Tolerance:  If you are growing lettuce in the heat, plant them where they will get afternoon shade.  Lettuce is a spring and fall crop in really hot areas.

Harvest Tips: For a continual harvest, sow every 2-3 weeks a new crop if cutting full heads, otherwise harvesting outside leaves will encourage a longer harvest from individual plants.

Seeding Rate:

30,000 plants/acre, aproximately 2 oz.

Heirloom seeds are hardy but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - not letting the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely or overwatering and possibly having them rot.
