organic lettuce seedOrganic Tom Thumb Lettuce Seed (50 days)

Introduced some time in the 1850s!

Small, round head with delicate leaves. About the size of a baseball.  Perfect for one-person salad. Can be planted close together in small space. Would grow well in containers on your patio or use it as a petite planting border.  I've seen these used at dinner parties where literally the entire head is put on a plate and dressed.  It was a wonderful effect and perfect for those outdoor garden parties where you want something light and refreshing.

1878 Livingston's Gardeners Seed List says...
"
A very dwarf and productive variety of good quality, highly prized, 10 inches"

1888 RH Allen Seed co. says...
"Very dwarf, but an abundant yielder. Fine quality. 9 inches"

Recommended by the Following State Universities or Ag Extension Offices as a variety that performs well for their region . CA, FL,

Planting Tips for Organic Heirloom Lettuce Seeds:

Sow directly into very fertile, loose soil.  Thin down to final spacing once plants are established.  For best results, plant in spring or fall.  Harvest outside leaves for a continual harvest.  For longer harvest, stagger plantings every 2-3 weeks.

Heat Tolerance:  If you are growing lettuce in the heat, plant them where they will get afternoon shade.  Lettuce is a spring and fall crop in really hot areas.

Harvest Tips: For a continual harvest, sow every 2-3 weeks a new crop if cutting full heads, otherwise harvesting outside leaves will encourage a longer harvest from individual plants.

Seeding Rate:

30,000 plants/acre, aproximately 2 oz.

Heirloom seeds are hardy but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - not letting the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely or overwatering and possibly having them rot.
