Spinacia oleracea
Giant Winter (45 days)

Approximately 70-80 spinach seeds per gram

Giant Winter spinach has large smooth, semi-savoyed leaves.  This spinach is an extremely cold hardy variety that makes it great for early spring sowing or later fall sowing.   Giant winter spinach will last for over a week in our frig when put in a ziploc bag with a damp paper towel.  This makes eating fresh spinach for a lazy person like myself very convenient.

Heirloom Spinach Varieties:  Some of the many heirloom spinach varieties are: America Heirloom spinach, Bloomsdale Long Standing Heirloom Spinach, Bloomsdale Savoy Heirloom Spinach, Giant Thick Leafed Heirloom Spinach, Viking Heirloom Spinach, Monnopa Heirloom Spinach, Strawberry Heirloom Spinach, New Zealand Heirloom Spinach, Viroflay Heirloom Spinach, Giant Noble Heirloom Spinach, Gigante d'Inverno Heirloom Spinach, Merlo Nero Heirloom Spinach, Monstrueux De Viroflay Heirloom Spinach, and Red Malabar Heirloom Spinach (not a true spinach).

Planting Tips for Heirloom Spinach:

Spinach is a cool weather crop and can either be planted in spring or fall.  For a spring crop, be sure to start these vegetable seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date so that they can be transplanted in very early spring.  For a fall harvest, these heirloom seeds can be directly sown.  For best results, it is very important to keep soil evenly moist with regular light waterings.

When direct seeding, you should plant these heirloom seeds 1-2" apart.  Once they have shown several true leaves and are about 4" tall, you should then thin to final spacing.  For continual harvests, stagger plantings every 2-3 weeks for delicous spinach all season long.

Seeding Rate: 32,000 plants/acre, aproximately 2 lb.

Heirloom seeds are hardy, but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - don't let the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely, and don't overwater and possibly have them rot.
