Heirloom Tomatoes

January 3rd, 2010

The time is already on us and I’ve been planting tomatoes for 2010 in the greenhouse.  I first start off with the early, cool tolerant tomato varieties. Here are some of the ones I’m planting now.

Kimberly is one of the best tomatoes we have come across in years.  This is a truly early tomato producing in just 52 days!  The taste was out of this world and that is saying something for an early tomato.  However, Kimberly didn’t stop there, it produced all summer long.  I couldn’t believe it.  Not only was this an early producing tomato, but it was a steady producer throughout the season even when the summer heat finally got here.  You must save space in your garden for Kimberly!

Alaskan Fancy heirloom tomato produces in 55 days.  It produces nice golf-ball sized tomatoes early in the year and lends itself well to pot or patio culture.

Alpine was introduced to the market back in the 1950s I believe.  It produces in about 59 days.

Coldset is known for setting fruit even in cold weather.  It was believed or touted that it could tolerate frost, but this is myth it will freeze.  Perfect 6 oz tomatoes are great in salads.

Celebrating a Year of Doing Business!

January 3rd, 2010

Wow, I just can’t believe it has already been more than a year since we started this seed company. It has been such a bountiful year indeed! Yes, I had to include this picture of me bringing in the grape harvest here in the Sonoma County Wine Country. It just seemed fitting!

We started this seed company with a core set of ideals to treat customers the way we as gardeners had always wanted to be treated. We wanted to sell heirloom seeds that were Sustainably Grown. That meant setting the bar higher than just plain old “organic”. We wanted to give you more information on each variety than just the typical one liners you see in seed catalogs. We wanted to start a seed revolution!

Now it is one year later and we have gone from offering 76 to 556heirloom seed varieties! We put a product and idea out there and you responded overwhelmingly. Without you, none of this would have been possible. Thank you so much for your phone calls, emails, and letters of encouragement. Thank you for your patronage to an idea that we all can truly make a difference in this world.

150 Varieties of Heirloom Tomato Seed

January 2nd, 2010
Chocolate Stripes Heirloom Tomato

Chocolate Stripes

You told us tomatoes were near and dear to your heart. So, we grew out 150 varieties for this year’s 2010 catalog! We grew some really rare tomatoes that you won’t find anywhere else – just like “Katja”. This is one big, beefy Russian heirloom tomato that produces weeks before Brandywine is even getting close. Katja is a beefsteak that laughs at cool nights and produces some of the biggest, tastiest tomatoes you’ve ever seen.

On the other end of the spectrum there is Coyote. Coyote is a tiny yellow tomato with a taste that will knock you on your socks. Not only is the taste amazing, but you only need to plant a few of the babies to be showered in golden goodness!

We are so pleased to announce an entirely new seed line that is dry farmed. Just what is dry farming? Simply put, we use no water in growing these tomatoes other than the day they are planted! This produces one tough tomato plant. We constantly select the best performers to make the cut for our seed. Each year this line will get progressively better as we improve our strains. The world is changing and water is the next precious resource – like petroleum. Prepare yourself and your family with a line of seed that can handle dry conditions!

We strive to sell the highest quality open pollinated and heirloom vegetable seeds. Our chief concern is empowering you, the customer, to be able to grow your own vegetables year after year by being able to save your seed. Not growing GMO seed or hybrid vegetable seed allows you to keep the seed your plants create and know you'll get the same vegetable every time. We value your input and comments and want to create a community of concerned citizens who care about the food they eat, the ground they grow their vegetables in, and the world in which we live. To protect your pollinators and bees, please limit or eliminate your pesticides use, they will thank you for it!
