Brassica oleracea
Vates Collard Greens (75 days)

Vates was a real producer in our 2008 garden trials.  We had copious amounts of dark green tasty leaves.  So much so the rabbits and chickens had a banner year!

32" tall, silvery green, succulent and very slow to bolt.

Best planted early like most brassicas they don't like extreme (90+) heat.  Although, because we are on the Pacific Coast we grew Vates Collard Greens all year long with no problem.  Try them again as a fall planting if your summers are too hot.

Vates Collard Greens is Recommended by the Following State Universities or Ag Extension Offices as a variety that performs well for their region. IL, FL, OR, TX,

Planting Tips for Heirloom Colard Greens:

Start spring seedlings 4-5 weeks before transplanting.  Start fall transplants 2-3 months before first frost.  Transplant out to the garden when 3” tall, at least 90 days before your first frost in midsummer.  When transplanting, enrich soil with a little blood and bone meal.  Will tolerate warmer temperatures than other cole crops.  Keeping soil evenly moist is a must for a healthy crop.

Seeding Rate for Heirloom Collard Greens:

60,000-70,000 plants/acre,

Heirloom seeds are hardy, but always take care with your garden seeds to give them the appropriate amount of moisture - don't let the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely, and don't overwater and possibly have them rot.
