Birdhouse Bottle Gourd Seeds (125 days)
3 gram package
This is the famed gourd that people have been growing for their feathered friends for years! I remember my grandfather growing them next to the lake where the martins came to live every year. I would spend hours laying in the grass under grandpa's birdhouse gourds watching the martins come and go. There was something magical about it. Occasionally, a warbler would take to nesting in one as well.
Kids LOVE.... to grow them...to paint them and to watch the birds raise their young every year. This is a great project for the kids.
Some of the coolest martin houses I've seen are 30-40 of these amazing gourds hanging together. Many people paint them different colors and hang them in a sort of art sculpture that is sure to have the neighbors talking. Not to mention the Purple Martins showing up to make their homes and catch bugs! Now that is organic pest control!
Sow only after soil temperature has warmed up. About the same time you plant corn. Earlier in pots for transplant if you have a short growing season like we do here on the cool West Coast. Make sure to give birdhouse gourds plenty of room on the ground or train them up a trellis.
I have 5 vines, the largest is about to bloom, when some gourds are produced I will let you know.
