Barley is a short-season, early maturing crop grown commercially in both irrigated and in dry land environments. Because this grain adapts well to different types of environments, it is grown in many regions throughout the United States. In fact 27 states in the US grow barley to some extent. Major producing states, in descending order of production, include North Dakota, Idaho, Montana, Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, Virginia, Minnesota, Maryland, South Dakota, Oregon and Utah.

Next to wheat, the most valuable grain is barley, especially on light and sharp soils. It is a tender grain and easily hurt in any of the stages of its growth, particularly at seed time; and in all the after processes, greater pains and attention are required to ensure success than in the case of other grains.

***This type/var. of barley changes frequently. This why we call it "Common Grain". In other words, it could be a 2 row, 4 row or 6 row barley. Variety changes with supply. If you need a certain type of barley this is not the barley for you.
