This is the mainstay of our gardens. Our strain of Calabrese is VERY frost tolerant. As I type this four days after Christmas and nine days after a week long ice storm, WE STILL HAVE BROCCOLI. The hybrid broccoli froze solid.
Start Green Sprouting broccoli early in the season and by early summer you will have tons of sweet broccoli. Harvest the central head then lay the plant over on its side for an explosion of side shoots that will just keep coming till the heat of summer.
If you are in a relatively cool area as we are, green sprouting broccoli may continue to produce for 6 months or longer. We don't plant a fall crop we just keep this one crop trimmed and enjoy the rewards. You just can't beat Calabrese.
