Cucumis melo Reticulatus Group
Led by Dr Morris Hughe, Planter's Jumbo melon was selected in 1954 by the USDA and Clemson, South Carolina Agricultural Experimental Station.
The melons are 4-5 pounds, have a thick, protective rind and are lightly ribbed.
The flesh is orange, juicy and contains a relatively small seed cavity.
Excellent shipper and a regular at fruit stands in the south.
Drought tolerance.
Vigorous vines.
Unlike other melons, planters jumbo can tolerate high rainfall levels because of its powdery mildew and downy mildew resistantance.
Well adapted to the Southern States.
